オーストラリアのお客様からお礼のメールを頂戴しました。
その中に、porcelain という見慣れない単語を発見！受験英語の世界をくぐり抜けて来た私は、大抵の英単語を一度は目にしたことがあるはずです。しかしながら、porcelain って？改めて辞書を引いてみることに相成りました。

英和辞典を引いてみると、不可算名詞の「磁器」と書かれています。
料理を盛りつけたお皿にご興味を示されていたのを思い出しました。購入できる場所を尋ねられたのですが、残念ながら先代からのお下がりだったためお答えすることができませんでした。
お礼メールから学ぶ英単語
お客様とのやり取りの中から、新たに覚える英単語もあります。
あるいはうろ覚えだった英単語を、改めて頭に焼き付けることもあります。日々勉強を心掛けてさえいれば、様々なところに学習材料が転がっています。
ちなみに porcelain には他動詞もあります。
porcelainize で、～を磁器にする・ほうろう引きにするという意味になります。

今回、お客様は安倍文殊院にも足を延ばされたのですが、お寺を形容する tranquil という単語も忘れかけていました(笑)
「静かな、平穏な」を意味する形容詞です。同意語としては calm が挙げられますが、tranquil の方がより落ち着いた雰囲気を表します。とても穏やかで、平和に安んじた状態を tranquil という言葉で表現するようです。辞書には、a tranquil retired life （＝平穏な隠遁生活）と例示されています。
ご存知のように、安倍文殊院には平和を象徴するウォーナー塔が建っています。
お客様が肌で感じられた境内の雰囲気も、tranquil そのものだったのでしょう。
